Well pumps aren’t a piece of equipment everyone has to think about. Folks who live in a city or suburb usually benefit from a public water supply. When they want water, all they have to do is turn on the tap. When it’s time to do laundry or wash the dishes, they just start the washing machine or dishwasher and assume there will be water. However, that’s not the case for all of our Hudson Valley customers. Some of you live in more remote locations. Or perhaps you have a farm or other business that must rely on a well for your water. Downey Energy is here for those customers. In addition to providing reliable propane and heating oil delivery, we also sell well pumps and provide installation, conversion, maintenance, and repairs for well pumps. If you’re not too familiar with well pumps, keep reading to learn more.
Well pumps perform an essential function. They are how water gets from your well to the pressure tank that provides water for your home or business. When your tank needs more water, the pressure switch signals the well pump to send water from the well. Once there’s enough water (pressure), the switch then signals the well pump to turn off.
On average, well pumps tend to last between 8 and 15 years. One of the biggest determinants of how long any particular well pump will last is the number of times a day it runs. The higher the frequency of your pump’s duty cycle, the more wear and tear there will be on its motor. And that will inevitably shorten its life expectancy. If your home’s water tank is too small, that will also cause your pump to run more and make it harder to keep up with demand. Additional factors in the life expectancy of your pump include the quality of the motor, the amount of sediment in the water, and the height of your water table.
